Just take some mud and throw it on the car to look like you went through a mud patch... and then make sure it covers the scratch. Thats what I did one time we had a rental.

Buf out as much as you can, then get it all dirty as hell (normal dirt, not mud). That's what I usually do when I mess up rentals, and I have yet to pay for one yet and it's not quite as obvious as the "went muddin'" method, which sometimes makes them check closer, to make sure you didn't break their ford fusion by taking it off road

lol...thanks for the tips. I got some detailing kit at WalMart...got it color matched. gonna try the rubbing compound and buff it out. The kit comes with a clear coat repair tube. had to wait 24 hours for the pigment to cure before I can sand and buff it out. getting some looks from the other guests as I detail my car in the parking lot
re-read the contract and I think the most they can charge me for is $500 - I'm supposed to get the difference back if it costs less ;-)
They were gonna charge me $280 for the insurance so this little adventure could cost me $250...$220 difference of 500-280 plus $30 for detailing supplies...
Why are there so many people in the US who just do random shit?? (okay Canada too...but we are polite and leave notes ... dear sir/madam, since your car was the newest one in the parking lot and I just lost my job and drank a fifth of Jack I decided to vent my frustration with society and key your car. have a nice day!).

Did you call your insurance company? Working for an auto insurance company, we're tought never to accept the rental car insurance. The RENTAL CAR INSURANCE IS A SCAM, any damages to your rental should be covered under your current insurance, but there may be different stipulations with being from Canada (being serious, but it could be taken as silly).

good idea Kasper. I know I am covered for collisions didn't ask about vandalism. I'll send them an email. there will be a deductible but it might be cheaper. thanks man.
